Differing rate of success of IVF – a discussion

The development of the methodology and concept of test-tube baby has been a real boon to couples with infertility problems. The scientific term for this method of assisted reproductive technology is Invitro fertilization.

In layman terms, the process of invitro fertilization involves that a woman’s eggs be surgically extricated and placed in a Petri dish. Sperms from a male are then introduced into this dish and artificially united with the egg. The fertilized egg is then transferred into the uterus of the woman.

The procedure was initially devised to help cases of tubal factor infertility. But, nowadays it is used across infertility issues including inability to conceive due to immunological problems, irregular ovulation, endometriosis, low sperm count and/ or motility and unexplained infertility.

In spite of its overall popularity, the success rate of IVF has been barely 50%. There are many factors, which contribute to the rate of success of an IVF procedure. Of all, the age of the partners is the most important. The ideal age for a higher success rate of Invitro fertilization is 35 years or lesser. In this age group, the success rate of the first IVF procedure is almost 50%!

As the age of the couple increases, the rate of success tends to decrease. Then, the procedure tends to involve a number of trials, before the patient is finally able to conceive a child. This increases the IVF cost.

The success rate for people between 35 an 37 years of age is approximately 25%. Women over the age of 40 have just 6% to 10% chances of bearing a child per treatment.

Other than the age of the couple, the general health of the couple is also a major factor in deciding the success of each IVF treatment.

It has been quite some time since IVF technology has been around. The technology has naturally evolved over a period of time. However, there are still no guarantees that the patient will be able to conceive. To make matters worse, the IVF cost also acts as a deterrent for many couples, who otherwise want to try this method.
