A Cure For Acne - Do Scientists Now Have a Breakthrough

I was reading online that in a national British newspaper, The Telegraph, it was claimed that Scientists believe they have found a breakthrough treatment for acne.

In the article, it was quoted that the drug, specifically named SMT D002, can actually reduce the flow of sebum. This fact is believed to be a significant cause( around 90 per cent) for the cause of acne. At present, the drug SMT D002, is in the form of a pill and is at present in use to treat a certain condition other than acne.

However the drug company has plans to turn the product into a cream form which will make it easier to use. Researchers believe it could become as effective a treatment as retinoic acid - form of vitamin A - which is currently used to treat moderate to severe cases.

However, it must be noted that Roaccutane, which is the most widely used form of retinoic acid, has unfortunately been linked to suicides that have occurred among acne sufferers. This was quoted in the article. SMT D002 produced no significant side-effects when volunteers took it in pill form. Around three in every 10 who were patients who took retinoic acid do not respond to this drug, leaving many sufferers with no effective treatment.

The spokesman for the company Summit Corporation, which is based in Oxford, said that it was turning the drug into a cream because it was likely to work more quickly. It added that because of commercial reasons, it would not reveal the name of the existing drug. Richard Storer, the company's chief scientist, said: "It is a major drug, but we cannot reveal its name or the condition it currently treats."
